Manuel Pais Clemente, MD, PhD completed his Residency in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Boston University School of Medicine in 1976. He is a Professor and Chairman of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at the Porto University School of Medicine since 1979 and Chief of Service at the Hospital S. João, Porto, Portugal, since 1983. Also he is the Chairman of the Center for Optical Technologies (CETO) in Porto where he developed new optical equipments for cancer detection in laryngology in cooperation with the industry. His current areas of interest include voice disorders, rhinosinusal pathologies, head and neck cancer, smoking prevention, optical technologies and interface R&D with the industry. He has presented over 800 scientific papers, more than 250 published articles in scientific journals and books and he is a member of 20 organizations. He has been awarded with numerous medals and honors, including the medal of Distinguished Services from Portuguese Ministry of Health in 2001, the Honor Award from the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery in 2003 and the Honor Award of the Romanian Academy of Science in 2006.
